The Atlanta Braves remain the top team in the TSN.ca MLB Power Rankings, ahead of the Milwaukee Brewers and Texas Rangers. The Rangers climbed, from seven to three, getting third baseman Adrian Beltre and left-handed starter Matt Harrison off the DL. Stellar pitching has lifted the Kansas City Royals from 14 to eight, while surprisingly potent bats have raised the White Sox from 16 to nine. Cole Hamels returned to the Philadelphia Phillies rotation, helping them move from 17 to 10, while the San Francisco Giants are up from 19 to 13 despite their pitching struggles, and the New York Mets, with solid starting pitching, have jumped from 27 to 16. Heading the other way, the L.A. Angels of Anaheim dip from nine to 14, in part due to both starting corner outfielders being hurt. The Toronto Blue Jays snapped a four-game losing streak Sunday, but they still drop from 12 to 17. After getting swept out of Los Angeles, the Cincinnati Reds fall from 13 to 20, the Miami Marlins go from 15 to 21, Tampa Bay Rays crash from 10 to 23 and the San Diego Padres go from 18 to 25. Its still relatively early so the fluctuations tend to be larger than they are later in the season. He was still a kid, going into his senior year of high school. Thursday, the point guard stood in front of a couple dozen members of the media and spoke with poise about how much hed grown since then, and how hes ready for the next level. The National Hockey League’s scheduling process strikes me as a laborious task. The people responsible for creating the thirty team schedules have to take into account things like venue availability, travel burden, associated costs of travel, and competitive balance, all while trying to squeeze 1,230 games into a seven-month window. One of the things I’ve always found most interesting is how the league attempts to mitigate the number of back-to-back situations (not so eloquently referred to as “schedule losses” in NHL and NBA circles), a considerable slice of the league’s larger fight with competitive balance. To the league’s credit, Dirk Hoag’s work suggests that the league does try to schedule a comparable number of back-to-back situations for every franchise. Now, the eyeball test has long been damning of team performance on the second-half of back-to-backs, and I think that’s largely why the league has really made a concerted effort to balance the number of schedule losses around the league. The data substantiates what the eyeball test has told us for so long – teams on no rest struggle considerably relative to league norms, considerably so when those back-to-backs come on the road. Seven years of available data substantiates what the eyeball test has told us for so long – teams on no rest struggle considerably relative to league norms. Below, I have compiled Score-Adjusted Fenwick%, 5-on-5 Goal%, and Regulation/OT Win% for teams in back-to-back situations. They are slotted next to your league-average rates, to illustrate the drop-off between the two. (Score-Adjusted Fenwick% is a measure of 5-on-5 unblocked shot attempts, weighted for score, comparing results to league averages based on game score.) The Value of Rest Score-Adjusted Fenwick% Goal% Regulation/OT Win% Back-to-Back Home 51.0% 51.0% 53.0% All Home 52.0% 52.0% 56.0% Back-to-Back Road 47.0% 46.0% 41.0% All Road 48.0% 49.0% 44.0% So, teams without rest against teams with rest of ranging length are going to underperform – we see a three percentage drop-off in regulation/overtime win percentage for both home and road teams, which really is the smoking gun. It’s also hard to miss that possession and goal metrics slide in both states, too. Home teams drop a full percentage point on both fronts. Road teams drop a percentage point in possession rates, and three percentage points in goal rates. But, back-to-back situations – or “schedule losses” -- aren’t the only instance where a team is disadvantaged. The theory isn’t just that teams devoid of rest are at a disadvantage.dddddddddddd It’s that teams disproportionately rested to the opposition are at a disadvantage, in which back-to-back situations are only a small part of a large sample. Let’s change gears and turn to rest differentials. We can pull data for how teams perform with three days favorable rest, two days favorable rest, one day favorable rest, and so forth. If our theory holds true, performance – be it by possession rates, goal rates, or win rates – should deteriorate as rest becomes less advantageous, and travel becomes more frequent. Over the same seven years of data, here’s how home teams performed over various rest differentials. Home Team Rest Advantage 2007-2014 Rest Advantage Score-Adjusted Fenwick% Goal% Regulation/OT Win% 3 or more day deficit 50.9% 48.3% 52.3% 2-day deficit 51.1% 50.6% 54.9% 1-day deficit 51.6% 51.9% 54.2% Even 51.3% 52.0% 55.3% One-day advantage 52.1% 53.4% 58.9% Two-day advantage 52.6% 54.0% 58.3% 3 or more day advantage 51.9% 51.7% 51.6% I think this graph is about as telling as it gets. As you increase a home team’s rest advantage, their possession rates, goal rates, and win rates all spike. The inverse, of course, is true for road teams – as they see rest become more unfavourable, possession rates decline, goal rates decline, and win rates decline. Again, this gets very much back to what our eyes tell us – that teams who have rest advantages generally play a better hockey game, and teams that are fatigued generally play a worse hockey game. More importantly, it signifies that not all games are created equal. A home team with a two-game rest disadvantage is only expected to control 51.09% of the play, 50.58% of the 5-on-5 goals, and win 54.87% of the games. A home team with a two-game rest advantage should be held to significantly higher standards: on average, they should control 52.64% of play, score 54.04% of the goals, and win 58.25% of the hockey games. It seems certain to me that the league would be privy to this sort of data and reluctant to put teams into positions where they are regularly at a rest disadvantage, but it’s still an important topic that should be considered when forecasting future outcomes. Rightfully, analysts spend a lot of time talking up the importance of home-ice advantage – the data bears this advantage out. However, this data suggests that rest is another critical, albeit less appreciated, factor for teams and associated performance. ' ' '

NEW YORK -- Serena Williams big lead in the U.S. Open final suddenly was gone. Her serve was shaky. Her hard-hitting opponent, Victoria Azarenka, was presenting problems, and so was the gusting wind. A couple of foot-fault calls added to the angst. As a jittery Williams headed to the sideline after dropping a set for the first time in the tournament, she chucked her racket, which ricocheted onto the court. When play resumed, in the crucible of a third set, Williams put aside everything and did what she does best: She came through in the clutch to win a major match. Facing her only test of the past two weeks, the No. 1-seeded Williams overcame No. 2 Azarenka 7-5, 6-7 (6), 6-1 on Sunday for her 17th Grand Slam championship. "When youre always trying to write history, or join history in my case, maybe you just get a little more nervous than you should. I also think its kind of cool, because it means that it means a lot to you. It means a lot to me, this trophy," Williams said, pointing her right hand at her fifth silver cup from the U.S. Open, "and every single trophy that I have." That collection keeps growing. Williams has won twice in a row at Flushing Meadows -- beating Azarenka in three sets each time -- and four of the past six major tournaments overall. Her 17 titles are the sixth-most in history for a woman, only one behind Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert, and the same total as the mens record-holder, Roger Federer. "It feels really good to be in that same league as him," said Williams, who earned $3.6 million in prize money. This one did not come easily, even though it appeared to be nearly over when Williams went ahead by two breaks at 4-1 in the second set. She served for the match at 5-4 and 6-5 -- only to have the gutsy Azarenka, a two-time Australian Open winner, break each time. Williams is 67-4 with a career-high nine titles in 2013, but two of those losses came against Azarenka. A year ago, they played the first three-set womens final in New York since 1995. This time, they went the distance again, a total of 2 hours, 45 minutes, because Azarenka was superior in the tiebreaker. "I got a little uptight, which probably wasnt the best thing at that moment," Williams said. "I wasnt playing very smart tennis then, so I just had to relax and not do that again." So after the second set, Williams gave herself a pep talk. She regrouped and regained control. "In the third set, Serena really found a way to calm down and restart from zero and quickly erase what happened," said her coach, Patrick Mouratoglou. Azarenka helped a bit, with two of her seven double-faults coming when she got broken to trail 3-1 in the third. That pretty much sealed it, because Williams was not about to falter again. "Shes a champion, and she knows how to repeat that. She knows what it takes to get there. I know that feeling, too. And when two people who want that feeling so bad meet, its like a clash," Azarenka said, pounding her fists together. At the outset, though, the 15 mph wind that swirled in Arthur Ashe Stadium bothered Williams as much as Azarenka did. "It wasnt pleasant," Azarenka said. Williams caught service tosses. She grabbed at her skirt to keep it from flying up. Most troubling, she was thrown off by balls that danced oddly. Six of the first 16 points ended with unforced errors by Williams, which allowed Azarenka to go ahead 2-1. Looking hesitant at times, Williams did not show the same dominance she had while dropping only 16 games during six victories through the semifinals. "The wind was unbelievable today," Williams said. "It just got worse and worse. It just never let up." She needed to adjust, and she did. Her serve, as usual, made a big difference: Williams hit nine aces, one at 126 mph. Still, four times, Azarenka was only two points from taking the opening set. At one such moment, with Williams serving at deuce after a double-fault, she was called for a foot fault, erasing what would have been a 121 mph ace. There was another foot-fault call in the second set, too. They brought back memories of the Americans loss to Kim Clijsters in the 2009 semifinals, when Williams was docked a point, and later fined, for a tirade against a line judge over a foot-fault call. There was no such outburst directed at officials this time, although there was that racket toss. After the call in the matchs 10th game, Williams simply put a hand to her face, composed herself, and won the point with a down-the-line backhand she celebrated with a fist pump, some foot stomping and a yell of "Come on!" Williams wound up holding there with a 104 mph ace, part of what seemed to be a match-altering stretch. She won five consecutive games and 16 of 18 points to take the first set and go up a break in the second. "You could see she clicked," Mouratoglou said. "She realized she was not aggressive enough. She was letting Vika dictate too much, and all of a sudden, things completely changed." Well, at least for a while. Azarenka did manage to make competitive again, which shouldnt surprise anyone. She was, after all, 31-1 on hard courts entering Sunday, including a victory over Williams last month at Mason, Ohio. But when it came time to close the deal yet again, Williams shined. She delivered six of the third sets eight winners and forced Azarenka into 15 miscues. Soon enough, Williams was hopping up and down after finishing with a service winner. She kept pumping her fist afterward, even while sipping from a water bottle. "She really made it happen," Azarenka said. "In that particular moment, she was tougher today. She was more consistent, and she deserved to win." Williams became the first woman to surpass $9 million in prize money in a single season, while topping $50 million for her career. She also equaled Steffi Graf with five U.S. Open titles, one behind Everts record of six in the Open era, which began in 1968. Williams never had won two consecutive U.S. Opens, but now she has, adding to the trophies she earned in New York in 1999 -- at age 17 -- then 2002 and 2008. Those go alongside five from Wimbledon, five from the Australian Open, and two from the French Open, which she won this year. "Being older, its always awesome and such a great honour, because I dont know if Ill ever win another Grand Slam. Obviously I hope so," said Williams, who turns 32 on Sept. 26. "Its different now, because when I won earlier, it was just one or two or three or four. Now its like 16, 17. It has more meaning (for) history, as opposed to just winning a few." BILBAO, Spain -- Athletic Bilbao striker Aritz Aduriz scored goals at the start of each half to help the Basque club beat Malaga 3-0 on Monday, strengthening its hold on Spains final Champions League berth. Bilbao dominated the one-sided match at its New San Mames Stadium, with Malaga never able to counter the hosts up-tempo attack. Aduriz took his first goal four minutes in when he shook his marker to head in Markel Susaetas corner kick at the near post. Aduriz tapped in another Susaeta pass seconds after halftime, and Ander Herrera hit from long range in the 62nd. Adurizs double increased his team-leading tally to 15 goals in league play this season. The win restored Bilbaos hold on fourth place. Sevilla was left six points behind with five rounds to play. "We are satisfied because we needed to take these three points," Aduriz said. "There are still many points in play and we need to earn as many as we can because other teams are coming on strong behind us." MIAMI -- Marcell Ozuna has given the Miami Marlins big hits and some hope for the future. The 22-year-old rookie outfielder drove in two runs to help the Marlins to a 4-2 win over the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday night in interleague play. "Hes put together a lot of great at-bats, big at-bats, and he did again tonight," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said. Ozuna is hitting .438 (21 for 48) with runners in scoring position, driving in 22 runs for the last-place Marlins. "Just going to home plate and thinking, see the ball up a little bit and if its in the middle, swing or if its away and up, swing no matter what," Ozuna said. Derek Dietrich also provided some offence with a home run for the Marlins, who have won four of five. A.J. Ramos (2-2) pitched two scoreless innings in relief and Steve Cishek worked the ninth for his 13th save. Minnesota dropped its third game in the last four. "It wasnt our night," Twins manager Rod Gardenhire said. "We left some pitches up in the zone late. Every time we did, they seemed to whack it. We also made three errors. You dont win too many games when you make three errors whether it costs you runs or not." Miami starter Jose Fernandez allowed one run and four hits in five innings. The 20-year-old phenom struck out three and walked three while throwing 94 pitches, 59 for strikes. "He kept us in it," Redmond said. "You think about a young kid who didnt really have his best stuff, but still was pretty impressive out there and made pitches when he absolutely needed to. Thats the kind of guy he is." Fernandez is 2-1 with a 1.67 ERA in five June starts. "I wanted to keep pitching, but my stuff wasnt there today and I agree with the decision," Fernandez said. Minnesotas Justin Morneau appeared to line into a double play to end the eighth, but first baseman Logan Morrison dropped the throw, allowing Joe Mauer to remain on base. Two batters later, Trevor Plouffe took advantage of Morrisons error with an RBI single, scoring Mauer to cut the deficit to 3-2. Ozunas RBI double in the bottom of the eighth after Morrison doubled pushed the lead to 4-2. "Im really proud of (Ozuna) and surprised hes doing so well especially driving in tough runs," Morrison said. Cishek retired the Twins in order in the ninth. Josh Willinghams RBI single in the third opened the scoring for Minnesota. Kevin Correia (6-5) held the Marlins scoreless through five innings before running into trouble in the sixth. After Ed Lucas singled and Giancarlo Stanton walked, Morrison singled to load the bases. Ozuna singled to centre, scoring Lucas as centre fielder Clete Thomas bobbled the ball, also allowing Stanton to score for a 2-1 lead. "I felt I made one bad pitch that inning and that was enough to give up a couple of runs," Correia said. Correia allowed two runs and five hits in six innings after beating the Marlins on April 23. Brian Duensing relieved Correia and yielded a home run to Dietrich, his seventh, for a 3-1 advantage. It was a rare home run as Duensing had not surrendered one in his previous 48 appearances and Dietrich was hitless in 17 at-bats before the homer. "He made a simple adjustment for that at-bat," Redmond said. "He couldnt find his elbow guard and I told him, Well, dont wear the elbow guard and he hit a home run. Then the next time he had the elbow guard on and I said, Take the elbow guard off and he still got out, but I think were headed in the right direction." NOTES: Morrison has five multi-hit games in 11 games since returning from the disabled list. ... Twins RHP Mike Pelfrey was placed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday retroactive to June 19, but Gardenhire believes the break will benefit Pelfrey, who missed last season with Tommy John surgery. The Broncos try to move one step closer to a postseason berth on Sunday when they welcome the Buffalo Bills to Sports Authority Field. Denver can get back to the postseason for the fourth straight year with a win over the Bills plus losses from Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Kansas City, as well as a loss or tie from Houston. They can also get in under the same scenario if Kansas City ties, as long as San Diego also loses. Needless to say, the champagne will probably be on ice for another week or so. Denvers offense got itself untracked this past Sunday, as Peyton Manning threw two touchdown passes and C.J. Anderson shined once again running the ball to help the Broncos to a wire-to-wire 29-16 win over the Kansas City Chiefs. Manning passed for a season-low 179 yards on 17-of-34 efficiency, but Anderson was the story in Denvers 11th straight road win against an AFC West foe. The second-year running back out of California rushed for a career-high 168 yards on 32 carries, a week after gashing up Miamis defense for 167 in a win over the Dolphins. I think you need to be able to win different types of football games, Manning said. We wanted to establish the run. Andersons last two games were the two best rushing performances this season. Montee Ball, who started the season as Denvers lead back, had a season-high 67 yards in Week 1 and Ronnie Hillman went for 109 yards on Oct. 23. I like it, Manning said. We kept the defense on their heels. Demaryius Thomas and Anderson caught TD passes and Connor Barth, whom Denver (9-3) signed on Tuesday to replace rookie kicker Brandon McManus, went 5- for-5 on field goals in his debut with the team. McManus was waived after hitting just 3-for-6 over his last five games. Thomas has posted 88 receptions for 1,255 yards with 10 touchdowns this season to become just the sixth player in NFL history to reach 1,200 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns in three consecutive years. With 145 more receiving yards, Thomas will join Marvin Harrison (4) and Jerry Rice (3) as the only player in league history with three straight seasons totaling at least 1,400 yards receiving and 10 receiving scores. Manning could have another weapon back at his disposal on Sunday, as tight end Julius Thomas, who leads the NFL with 12 touchdown receptions, could be back after missing the last two games with an ankle injury. Buffalo also stayed in the AFC playoff hunt on Sunday, as Kyle Orton threw a touchdown pass, Dan Carpenter kicked four field goals in the fourth quarter and the Bills beat the Cleveland Browns, 26-10. Orton finished 17-of-31 for 190 yards with two interceptions. Fred Jackson had 70 yards on 21 carries for the Bills (7-5), who returned to Ralph Wilson Stadium after last Sundays scheduled home game was played a day later in Detroit after more than six feet of snow fell on the southern reaches of the Buffalo area. A win on Sunday would give the Bills eight wins in a season for the first time since going 9-7 in 2004. Of course, Buffalo is trying for its first postseason berth since 1999. After losing five straight in the series Denver has won the last two times it has played Buffalo, but it hasnt faced the Bills since 2011. WHAT TO WATCH FOR Anderson has certainly made life easier for Manning the past few weeks, posting a league-best 658 yards from scrimmage - 113 more than anyone else - while averaging 5.68 ypc over the last two weeks. Denver has won its last 11 games when it goes over 1000 yards.dddddddddddd. Conversely, the Broncos have averaged just 37.5 yards on the ground in their three losses. I like it, Manning said after the win over Kansas City. We kept the defense on their heels. That trend could continue this week, as the Bills have allowed 125.2 ypg on the ground and 4.85 ypc over the past six weeks. They had been one of the stingiest defenses in the league through their first six games when they held opponents to 67.5 yards and 2.79 ypc. Regardless few teams are better up front than the Bills, who lead the league with 48 sacks. Overall, Buffalos D is ranked fifth in the league. The Buffalo defense will certainly have its hands full against Manning, who leads the league with 36 touchdown passes this season and has thrown one in 51 straight games. Hes a Hall-of-Fame quarterback, and I think that says enough right there, coach Doug Marrone said Wednesday. Not to compare the two, but we play against a Hall-of-Fame quarterback twice a year in (Tom) Brady. Its the same thing. Its challenging. Youve got to just make sure you try to contain them. Obviously, its difficult. Youve got to switch things up; you cant keep things the same. If they get hot, then you can get yourself in trouble. Denver has averaged 304.4 yards through the air this season, while Buffalo ranks fifth for the season (216.1 yards per game) against the pass and has limited those last six opponents to 163.0 In four of their last six games played, Buffalo has held the opposing quarterback to under 200 yards passing (one of the two games over that mark was Miami with 205 yards in Week 11). A stark contrast to the first six games when each opposing QB passed for over 200 yards. In the beginning of the year, we had a couple new fresh faces in the secondary that we had to work with. So we had to get used to working with each other, said Buffalo safety DaNorris Searcy, who had two interceptions in the win over Cleveland. And now that weve been together for 12 games, we know how each other plays so now we just feed off each other. We know where each other is going to be so it makes it easier on the back end. Everybody is holding each other accountable and were all out here getting the job done. Buffalos defense now sits second in the league with 25 takeaways behind Houston and is tied for fourth in interceptions with 15. Look for the Bills to take a page out of St. Louis book in trying to defend Manning. The Rams confused the future Hall of Famer all afternoon back on Nov. 16 by disguising their coverages by waiting until the last possible moment before the snap to show what they actually were doing. By then, Manning had no time to adjust. He wound up throwing two interceptions, and only one touchdown, and finished with a season-low passer rating of 75.3. Its not just one person, Marrone said. Thats the difficult part about it when you play these types of quarterbacks. You go into a game and you want to take somebody away and, next thing you know, youre getting your butt kicked by a guy that wasnt as productive the week before or two weeks before. OVERALL ANALYSIS In Anderson Denver has found a new way to move the ball and that just makes Manning even more dangerous. The Bills defense certainly gets after the quarterback, but getting to Manning will be tough since he has only been brought down 13 times this season. The Bills secondary has been very good in recent weeks, but, again, Manning isnt Brian Hoyer. He is going to give the Bills fits, especially if he has Julius Thomas back in the lineup. LONDON -- Carl Froch knocked out British rival George Groves in the eighth round to retain his WBA and IBF super-middleweight titles in a rematch in front of 80,000 fans at Wembley Stadium on Saturday. Froch floored Groves with a huge right hook with about 30 seconds remaining in the round, with the referee immediately stopping one of most hyped fights in the countrys boxing history. He improved to 33-2, with 24 knockouts. "This is the greatest moment of my boxing career," Froch said. "Its the biggest event Ive been involved in." Groves (19-2, 15 KOs) had started slower but grew into the fight, only to be knocked down with Frochs biggest punch of the bout. "I feel like I let myself down," said Groves, who had vowed to send Froch into retirement with a victory. "Fair play, he got me with the punch." The rematch was ordered by the IBF after Frochs win in a controversial first fight in Manchester in November, when the referee stepped in too soon with Groves wobbling on his feet. This time, there were no complaints from Groves, who required treatment in his corner before going to congratulate Froch -- showing the bad blood between the pair that had dominated the build-up was over. The rematch was not as exciting as the first fight, with both boxers more restrained and seemingly intent on lasting the full distance. Froch -- arguably Britains top boxer for the last five years -- dominated the centre of the ring but only first connected with a left hand in the third round that rocked back Groves. Frochs punches were generally ragged and he walked into some punches by Groves in the sixth and seventh rounds. The ending was conclusive, though, with Froch swinging initially with his left and following it up with a massive right that left Groves in a heap on the canvas. "It was neck and neck, there was nothing in it," said Froch, who wants to crown his career with a fight in Las Vegas. "One punch was all the difference." The fight captured the public imagination, and was considered the biggest grudge match in British boxing since the days of the Nigel Benn-Chris Eubank rivalry in the early 1990s. MINNEAPOLIS -- Everything about Nikola Pekovic is big. Big muscles. Big scowl. Big tattoos. Now he has a contract to match. In giving the 27-year-old Pekovic a five-year deal that could be worth more than $60 million with incentives, the Timberwolves are bucking a trend that has started to take over the NBA. While so many other teams are starting to play small ball, the Wolves are going big. Theyve decided to jump on Pekovics broad shoulders and see how far the Montenegrin centre can carry them in a league that is getting smaller and smaller by the day. "A lot of people have asked me about centres in this league and whats happened is theyre almost a dinosaur," Timberwolves president of basketball operations Flip Saunders said Friday. "Many teams have gone to stretch-type playing and theyve done that because they dont have the ability to have somebody that they can put down on the block that has the ability to score on the block on a consistent basis. Thats something that Pek can do. With Peks physicality and along with Kevin Love we feel like we have two power players that can really be forces around the basket." The Miami Heat have won two straight titles with undersized Chris Bosh playing the bulk of the minutes at centre. Timberwolves coach Rick Adelman often used 6-foot-6 Chuck Hayes at centre when he coached the Houston Rockets. The Boston Celtics stayed relevant in large part thanks to Kevin Garnetts willingness to move from power forward to centre. In Pekovic, Saunders sees an opportunity to create mismatches against teams that try to go small against them, to punish them in the paint and pound them on the glass with the burly big man and Love, perhaps the leagues best rebounder. "I know the league is getting smaller and many teams in the (centre) position are playing guys from (power forward) ... So Im just happy to be here and be maybe one of the few old-fashioned centres who are going to play in the low post," Pekovic said. "Im just going to keep being that." Saunders called Pekovic one of the top two or three low-post centres in the game, and the numbers would support that. In his third season, he averaged 16.3 points and 8.8 rebounds and shot 52 per cent from the floor while shooting an impressive 74.4 per cent on free throws. Tim Duncan was named All-NBA first team centre during an incredible season for the San Antonio Spurs last year, but his career is entering the twilight phase. That may leave Marc Gasol from Memphis and Houstons Dwight Howard, who isnt as polished in the post but remains a tremendous force, as the other players who could be above Pekovic in the centre pecking order from an offensive standpoint. And despite the trend to go small, three of the four teams in the conference finals last season -- Indiana, San Antonio and Memphis -- had a huge presence in the post. In Minnesota he will team with Love and Ricky Rubio to form the core of what many consider to be an up-and-coming franchise. The Wolves havent made the playoffs since 2004. But if they can stay healthy -- Pekovic has missed 39 games in the last two seasons due to injury and Love only played 18 last year -- they believe that dubious skid will come to an end this year. Pekovic said his goal is to play in all 82 games during the regular season and Saunders said the team is looking at some of its training practices to try and reduce the wear and tear on a players body. Saunders believes Pekovic has trained too much at times and spent too much time in the weight room and that a more efficient program could help him. "I think there has to be a meeting of the minds of getting all people together and really getting a good plan and good format that players are doing the right thing and theyre not over-training parts of their body," Saunders said. Negotiations with Pekovics agent Jeff Schwartz dragged on for about a month and a half before Saunders added the fifth year on Tuesday to get the deal done. All of a sudden, Pekovic had gone from an unknown big man who appeared lost at times during his rookie season to a $60 million centerpiece of a franchises quest for redemption. "My agent asked me when we closed the deal, he asked me how do you feel," Pekovic said. "I said I still dont know. I still feel like unbelievable. I came like three years ago and I was basically not even a backup centre, nothing. I was kind of fighting for my position. ... I know that I was really fighting and pushing for this. Im really happy that all this happened." He also made it clear to Schwartz from the day the market opened on July 1 that he wanted to remain in Minnesota. While many other players have left smaller markets for more glamorous locales, Pekovic has warmed to Minnesotas icy climate and feels at home while fishing on one of the states 10,000 lakes. "People asked me, where do you want to live," Pekovic said. "I dont want to go to a bigger city. I just like it here. I like everything. I know its a little cold in the winter but you just get used (to it.). Its my fourth year here. Im basically a Minneapolis guy." ------ Seattle Supersonics Gear . -- Max Gilbert captured his first pro victory at the Tour Championship of Canada. GLASGOW, Scotland - A Commonwealth Games that began with an oft-injured Kirsten Sweetland racing to silver in the triathlon ended with Michelle Li capturing an historic badminton gold medal on Sunday. And in between, Canada racked up more medals than it did four years ago in New Delhi, India, and climbed back onto its traditional place on the Commonwealth medal podium. "Mission accomplished," said the Canadian teams general manager Scott Stevenson. Canada finished a solid third at the Games behind traditional powerhouses England and Australia, winning 82 medals — 32 gold, 16 silver, 34 bronze. Four years ago in India, Canada claimed 76 medals to finish fourth, kept off the medal podium for the first time since 1962. "What we were really pleased with is that we closed the gap a little bit (on England and Australia)," Stevenson said. "Not just us, some of the other nations as well. We all took a little bite out of those two big guns, and were pretty proud of that. Not just in total medals but also in gold medals." England topped the medal table with 174, while the Aussies wound up second with 137. Sultana Frizell of Perth, Ont., was chosen to carry Canadas flag into Sunday nights closing ceremonies, days after she won gold in the hammer throw, breaking the Commonwealth record three times in the process. Frizell led a strong Canadian track and field team that claimed 17 medals at storied Hampden Park, highlighted by Damian Warners victory in the decathlon, Derek Drouins high jump gold medal, and Brianne Theisen-Eaton and Jessica Zelinka finishing 1-2 in the heptathlon. Cam Levins won bronze in a thrilling 10,000-metre race, and the picture of the 25-year-old powering down the homestretch in the lead will be one of the enduring images of these Games. Canada sent its A team in every sport except judo, and 265 athletes in all — its largest team for a Commonwealth Games not on home soil. Sweetland, a 25-year-old from Victoria, started Canadas run to the medal podium in the Games first event, racing to silver to put all the frustration of six years of injuries behind her. "It was a gutsy performance by someone whos gone through some challenges. . . a great start to the Games," Stevenson said. There would be numerous other memorable moments over the ensuing 10 days of competition, including Patricia Bezzoubenko nabbing five of the six rhythmic gymnastics gold medals. "An absolutely spectacular performance," Stevenson said. In mountain biking, Catharine Pendrel pulled away in the first of six laps and never looked back to lead Canada to a 1-2 finish, crossing the finish line waving the Maple Leaf. Emily Batty won the silver. "Incredible, a very dominant performance by those two. Fantastic day when you see someone riding across with no hands, holding the flag over their head," Stevenson said. Ryan Cochrane set a personal best in winning the 400-metre freestyle, and then successfully defended his gold medal in the 1,500 freestyle. "This is not someone whos a young athlete," Stevenson said of the 25-year-old swimmer. "Many look at him and say hes still in his prime, but some say hes winding it down. I hope hes not." Ryan Bester won lawn bowling silver — Canadas first medal in the sport in 80 years. Twelve of Canadas 14 wrestlers won medals, and womens boxing made its Commonwealth Games debut, with Ariane Fortin taking silver at 75 kilograms and Mandy Bujold winning bronze at 51 kg. Canadas tag line for these Games was: the road to Rio goes through Glasgow and Toronto, and that was a talking point at the teams closing news conference on Sunday. "Were really pleased with what was accomplished here going forward, to the next Commonwealth games, but before that, going into Toronto next summer (the 2015 Pan American Games)," Stevenson said. "I think things are going in the right direction, and also towards Rio in two years. These are the people youre going to see going forward, and for obviously winning medals for Canada down the road." Chantal Petitclerc, Canadas chef de mission in Glasgow, said the Games were crucial in Canadas preparation for Rio. It was a chance for athletes to get a taste of the multi-sport Games experience before the bright lights shine on them at the Olympics. "I leave Glasgow convinced even more than ever before that these Games are important, we need them in the sports system," said Petitclerc. "You cant take athletes from their own specific sport to multi-sports Games and expect them to perform the first time." It was a chance for athletes to compete in front of a crowd. "For many sports you do that once every four years, so you cant expect athletes to go from performing in front of their family to a major Olympic stadium and have no impact. You cant prepare for it by visualization, thats not realistic." Glasgow was an enthusiastic host, rolling out the red carpet for the worlds 71 teams from the former British Empire. Fans packed the venues for virtually every session of every sport. "What was most impressive was the fact that you could go to a preliminary session and it was full. You dont always see that," Stevenson said. Finals: exciting, fantastic. But you go to preliminaries at 9 oclock on a mid-week and you get a full house." Nearly 5,000 athletes competed in 261 events in 18 different sports in the largest multi-sport event ever held in Scotland. Halifax bid to host the 2014 Games but dropped out of the Commonwealth race after the municipal and government withdrew its funding for what would have been $1.7 billion project. Gold Coast, north of Brisbane, Australia, will host the Games in 2018. Edmonton will bid to host the 2022 Games. So far, Durban, South Africa is the only other city to express interest in bidding. And my friends in the media are already asking That Question. But Graham DeLaet isnt ready to look beyond his first tee shot on Saturday. After equaling the course record on Friday, you can forgive everyone for getting a little excited about the possibilities. You know, the chance that this damn 60-year drought can come to an end. It would be a great moment for Canadian golf, a great moment for DeLaet and, selfishly, a great moment for the keyboard tappers and microphone holders who would no longer have to ask That Question any longer. But lets back up just a bit here. Its not Sunday, yet. DeLaet ignited everyones imagination of just what the coronation might look like by posting a smooth 63. For the first time in a while, his putter behaved as he used his flat stick just 25 times when on the green. That, he said, was the result of some work he did earlier in the week with short game coach Gabriel Hjertstedt. The two of them came up with one small change that, as it often does with something as confounding as putting, made a big difference. "My putting coach was here Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday," said DeLaet. "We put in some good work and changed a little bit of how I was seeing lines. I was picking spots in front of the ball instead of picking spots at the hole. Just something a little bit different and it was nice to see some putts rolling in." To a certain extent, DeLaet will always live and die with his putting. Its his Achilles heel in an otherwise bulletproof golf game. Just look at the stats for this year – hes second in greens in regulation, 11th in driving distance, fifth in total driving and – wait for it – 137th in strokes gained, putting, the key indicator of how a player performs on the greens. But on this day, he was pure. He drained a 30-footer on 14 for a birdie, another one from 21 feet on the first hole and sunk a 20-footer to save a bogey on the 18th hole. That last one might be the most vital of the mmany that found the bottom of the cup.dddddddddddd Playing his ninth hole of the day and already four under for the round, DeLaet drove his ball into the water, took a drop then hit his next shot up the fairway. From there he lofted a wedge onto the green. "I was kind of counting a double when I was walking up to the 18th green," he said, "so to hole that putt was a nice bonus." Its been a while since DeLaet has enjoyed such a good day with his putter, but he wasnt alone in getting the balls to drop. "It was definitely fun to see some putts roll in," he said. "All of us were kind of making putts all day." All of us would be his group of Matt Kuchar and Jim Furyk; the trio combined for 22 birdies. Furyk also tied the course record, held by Scott Verplank and David Morland IV. "There was just so much momentum," he stated. "The crowd was getting behind us. Even Matt and Jim, the crowd was starting to get behind them. They were just seeing such good golf all day. You definitely start feeding off each other and you almost expect to hole putts just to keep up." While DeLaet loved the emotion displayed by the fans at Royal Montreal – the vast majority on the property seemed to be following his group – and the way he played, he was careful not to start thinking about buying any silver polish just yet. The player who has yet to win a tournament on the PGA Tour is savvy enough to realize that it might take two more course records to get his name on the trophy. "I know theres going to be a little bit of added pressure because Im in good position heading into the weekend," said DeLaet. "But at the same time were only half way through this thing and if I can put something together like this [Saturday] then maybe we can start talking about that." Maybe for him. But in the brasseries and bistros and the dix-neuf holes, theyre already chatting. As they have been for oh, about 60 years. ' ' '

PHILADELPHIA -- Spencer Hawes had the hot hand and Philadelphia 76ers coach Brett Brown wasnt afraid to ride it. The 76ers centre hit a game-tying 3-pointer with 1.7 seconds left in regulation and scored 11 of his 25 points in the final two minutes of regulation and overtime Friday night to lead Philadelphia to a 115-107 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks. The Sixers trailed 98-88 with 2:10 to play but forced the extra session with a 14-4 run that featured three 3-pointers from Hawes, the last one tying the game. Hawes ran to the sideline to catch an inbounds pass, turned, and while falling away from the basket, released his shot on one leg. "Coach drew it up in the huddle and it reminded me of the last time a coach drew up a 3 for me to tie a game," Hawes said. "I was in college. I thought (Brown) screwed something up." Evan Turner added 27 points in helping the 76ers snap a four-game skid. "I guess the basketball gods were looking out for us and Spencer played well all night," said Turner who threw Hawes the inbounds pass. Hawes and Turner accounted for 19 of the Sixers final 22 points. Hawes added 12 rebounds for his ninth double-double in 14 games, and Turner was 8 for 12 from the field in the fourth quarter and overtime. "Spencer took us where we needed to go, and Evan took us home," Brown said. Caron Butler scored 38 points for Milwaukee, which lost its seventh straight. Butler fell two points shy of his career high on 13-of-22 shooting from the floor. He was 4 of 8 from beyond the arc. His 3-pointer from the right corner with 27.8 left in the game looked as if it would end Milwaukees skid, the franchises longest since it lost eight in a row to close the 2007-2008 season. "Yeah, I thought the game was in our control," Butler said. "But we havent developed a winning brand of basketball yet." Only two Bucks finished in double figures. Ersan Ilyasova scored 19 points and Gary Neal had 10. The Sixers also dominated on the glass, outrebounding the Bucks 50-32 and outscoring them 52-28 on points in the paint and 13-4 on second-chance opportunities. Still, had Hawes not hit his improbable fall-away, the Bucks would have won. "That was a tough shot," Butler said. "Hawes faded away, shot off one leg maybe, but it shouldnt have come to that. We had a lot of chances and all we needed was stops and rebounds." The Sixers actually led by as many as 15 points in the second quarter, but the Bucks scored 23 of the final 31 points in the period to get within 55-53 at the break. At that point, the Sixers were led by rookie forward and Georgetown product Hollis Thompson, who had a team-high 10 points in the first half and finished with a career-high 16. Guards James Anderson and Michael-Carter Williams added 12 points apiece, and Carter-Williams fell two rebounds of a triple-double, recording 11 assists and eight boards. The Sixers shot a season-high 57 per cent from the field and led the Bucks in almost every offensive category, but forfeited their early lead and found themselves down by double-digits in the fourth quarter thanks to 26 turnovers that led to 28 Milwaukee points. "We were very lucky," Brown said. Bucks coach Larry Drew couldnt say the same, but ended up sounding a lot like Butler. "Towards the end, we relaxed," he said. "We didnt defend the 3-point line. James Anderson got away and hit one, and Hawes hit three of them. "It was a tough shot. It was a desperation shot. It shouldnt have gotten to that point. We had opportunities, we just didnt capitalize on them." NOTES: Sixers second-year guard Tony Wroten left the game in the second half with a lower-back strain and did not return. ... After suffering its first loss of the season on Aug. 1, Calgary bounced back at home last Saturday with an easy 38-17 victory over Ottawa, and now it heads back out on the road looking to win its third straight away game. You can watch the game live today on TSN starting at 2:30pm et/11:30am pt. Hamilton has undoubtedly been one of the most disappointing teams in the CFL this season. A season removed from an appearance in the Grey Cup Final, the Ticats have floundered, opening up just 1-5. Their 36-29 loss to British Columbia on Aug. 8 was their second consecutive setback (and their fourth this season coming by seven points or fewer), but the silver lining is that they are situated in the much-inferior East Division, where they are only a game and a half behind Toronto (3-4) for first place. The teams squared off in Calgary back on July 18, with a fourth-quarter field goal lifting the Stamps to a 10-7 victory, their fifth straight win over the Ticats. Calgary won last weeks contest fairly easily behind another outstanding performance from Bo Levi Mitchell, who threw for 289 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for another major. The third-year signal caller has been excellent this year, completing 62.8 percent of his passes for 1,421 yards. Hes also tied for the league lead in touchdown passes (11) and has tossed only two interceptions. Marquay McDaniel was Mitchells preferred receiving target last week, hauling in nine passes for 117 yards and a touchdown. McDaniel now has 24 receptions for 308 yards and three scores on the season, and he and Jeff Fuller (23 receptions, 307 yards, four TDs) make up a formidable receiving duo. The Stamps do not feature a true lead back but instead get solid production from a rotation of rushers. Matt Walter (139 yards) and Jock Sanders (136 yards) have earned the most work, while Martell Mallett (132 yards) has been the most explosive with 7.8 yards per carry. While Calgarys offensive production ranks in the middle of the CFL pack (341.2 ypg), it has shined on the defensive side of the ball, ranking third in allowing just 321.6 ypg, which includes the top-ranked passing defense (198.2 ypg). Brandon Smith anchors the unit in the defensive backfield, as he ranks second inn the CFL in tackles with 32.dddddddddddd Linebacker Juwan Simpson has also been a solid stopper with 22 tackles. Joining Smith in arguably the leagues most talented secondary are Joshua Bell and Fred Bennett, who have both collected a pair of interceptions on the young season. Leading the pass-rush is Charleston Hughes, whose six sacks ranks second in the league behind only John Chick of the Roughriders (nine). Freddie Bishop III, Micah Johnson and Simpson also have multiple sacks. Hamiltons lackluster season has been well-represented in the league standings, as its total offense (331.5 ypg) and total defense (374.2 ypg) both rank eighth in the league. Dan LeFevour was solid under center in last weeks loss, completing 23-of-34 passes for 298 yards, while also turning nine carries into 103 yards and a touchdown. The Ticats appear to have found their answer at quarterback after Jeremiah Masoli (14-of-35, 225 yards, TD, two INTs) and Zach Collaros (23- of-41, 212 yards, TD, two INTs) both struggled early in the season. LeFevour also has more interceptions (three) than touchdown passes (two), but he has completed more than 67 percent of his passes is an outstanding threat out of the pocket with 272 rushing yards and four majors. Samuel Giguere showed outstanding big-play ability last week by racking up 130 yards on just three receptions, upping his yearly totals to 16 catches for 248 yards in the process. Rounding out the deep group of pass-catchers are C.J. Gable (30 receptions, 138 yards, two TDs), Luke Tasker (17 receptions, 208 yards, TD) and Cary Koch (13 receptions, 199 yards). The Ticats running backs were lost in the gameplan against BC their last time out, rushing just three times for -3 yards. Gable is typically a solid rusher, as hes added 30 carries for 138 yards and two scores to his impressive receiving totals. Defensively, Hamilton has allowed 28.6 ppg in the three contests since allowing only 10 points to Calgary last month. Simoni Lawrence is in the midst of a breakout campaign at linebacker, as his 31 tackles ranks third in the league and is already more than halfway to his career high of 52 set last season. Rico Murray has also been solid at linebacker, collecting 18 tackles while picking off two passes. Hamiltons pass-rush has been virtually non-existent. The defense has just three sacks in six games, with Bryan Hall recording two of those. As the last line of defense, Brandon Stewart (22 tackles) and Emanuel Davis (20 tackles) have been put to the test on a defense that gives up the most passing yards per game (278.8). ' ' '

(SportsNetwork.com) - The two worst teams in the Eastern Conference square off Wednesday night when the New York Knicks visit the Wells Fargo Center to take on the Philadelphia 76ers. The Sixers are 2 1/2 games ahead of their Atlantic Division rivals, but the Knicks played their way out of a massive funk last time out. The Knicks ended a franchise-worst 16-game losing streak on Monday with a 99-92 home victory over the New Orleans Pelicans. It was New Yorks first win in Madison Square Garden since Nov. 22 versus these same 76ers, a span of 12 games. We didnt really talk about how many games we had lost, Knicks coach Derek Fisher said. We had to act as if we expected this at some point. Obviously we enjoy it ... it feels good to win. Carmelo Anthony had 24 points and nine rebounds to lead the Knicks past the Pelicans, who played without both Anthony Davis and Jrue Holiday. Langston Galloway netted 21 points and Amare Stoudemire added 14 points and six rebounds off the bench for the Knicks, who hadnt won since Dec. 12 against the Boston Celtics. The Pelicans trimmed a 15-point first-half deficit to a point with under two minutes left when Tyreke Evans connected on a runner in the paint. Omer Asik was called for a foul with less than a second on the shot clock a bit later and with the time winding down again, Anthony found a wide open Jose Calderon in the right corner. Calderon, who had been 1-of-9 at that point, nailed the 3-pointer to stake the Knicks to a 96-92 advantage with 32.7 seconds left. Ryan Anderson was off on a right corner triple at the other end and Anthony sealed the outcome by making 3-of-4 from the foul line down the stretch. The Sixers have dropped two straight, but have won three of their last five in south Philadelphia. Both games during this little drought came on the road, with one in Detroit and one in Washington, DC. On Monday, the Wizards demolished the 76ers, 111-76. It was Philadelphias 12th straight loss by double-digits. I live in a naive world, Sixers head coach Brett Brown said. I really think were going to steal wins every time we play. (Our players) allow me to think that because they have spirited practices ... (but) sometimes you have one of those games. I think you have to give (the Wizards) credit when you look at how bad we were. I think they forced that. The Wizards led the Martin Luther King Jr. Day game for the final 42 minutes and were ahead by double digits over the last 38 1/2. Henry Sims led Philadelphia with 13 points. Jerami Grant scored 12 and Nerlens Noel had 11 with seven rebounds, three assists and four steals, but Michael Carter-Williams shot just 2-for-13 for seven points. The Knicks beat the Sixers by eight in MSG on Nov. 22 and have taken three straight and eight of the last 10 meetings. New York has won in five of its last six trips to Philadelphia. Air Force 1 Red Store .Y. -- That hangover from the Big East tournament is gone for Villanova. Air Force 1 White Store Sale . The former central defender calmly nodded it down and quietly went about celebrating a win with his staff. For a man who has had a lot on his shoulders this season, it was an appropriate moment. http://www.airforce1storesale.com/. The pair ended pointless droughts when they each scored two goals in a 6-4 victory over the Winnipeg Jets that halted a two-game losing skid for the Stars (15-11-5). Air Force 1 Grey Discount .Y. - Rob Manfred was promoted Monday to Major League Baseballs chief operating officer, which may make him a candidate to succeed Bud Selig as commissioner. Air Force 1 Grey Cheap Outlet . After all, the No. 8 seed is chasing far loftier goals. You can listen to the action on TSN Radio 690 Montreal beginning at 8:30pm et. Sportings last outing was a 0-0 draw with Real Salt Lake two weeks ago in a rematch of last seasons MLS Cup final, while Montreal is still searching for its first win of the 2014 campaign after playing to its third successive draw last weekend, a 1-1 stalemate with Chicago. Montreal lost its first three games to begin the season, but has rebounded to take three points from its last three matches. And although the team sits on the bottom of the Eastern Conference and has yet to record a win this season, goalkeeper Troy Perkins is encouraged by the last three results. "Everybody seems to see the negative, but the reality is weve gotten points in our last three games," Perkins said. "Were unbeaten, its still early in the season and were getting points, so we keep moving forward." In the Impacts last game, the club got a goal from Jack McInerney in the 43rd minute to take the lead on the Fire with McInerney scoring in his debut following a trade that sent Andrew Wenger to the Philadelphia Union in exchange for the 21-year-old. But McInerneys debut was spoiled by a second-half goal from Chicagos Quincy Amarikwa, forcing Montreal to settle for a point. The Impact wont be expected to pick up their first win on Saturday, but Perkins feels that the atmosphere in Kansas City will force his team to raise its level on play and that Saturdays contest will be a greeat test.dddddddddddd "You go to places like that and it demands that you step up your game," said Perkins of Montreals trip to Kansas City. "As professional athletes, you want to prove yourself against the best. You have to play at a higher level. You want to be tested. Its a high energy environment and I love playing those types of games." Sporting will be pleased to have some extra rest ahead of the match, but it wont do any good for defender Ike Opara, who is likely to miss the rest of the season with an ankle injury. Opara made a career-high 18 appearances last season after joining Sporting from San Jose in midseason, but now head coach Peter Vermes will have to replace the 25-year-old along the back line. One player who Vermes can rely upon is goalkeeper Erik Kronberg, who is making the most of his first season as the starting netminder after spending eight years as the number two, first to Kevin Hartman and then Jimmy Nielsen. "It always is tough for players like that to be able to follow in somebody elses footsteps," Vermes said of Kronbergs emergence this season. "But I truly believe that hes starting to forge his own path, and I think people are starting to see that he has qualities that are important to our team as well. Hes going to continue to grow as a keeper, and thats what we need him to do." The 0-0 draw with RSL marked Kronbergs second clean sheet of the season in the five games he has started, while Montreal will hope to replicate the success it had against Sporting last term when the Impact won two of the three meetings between the sides. TORONTO -- Its been a bad three-game stretch for the Blue Jays and the numbers tell a bleak story: three straight home losses, 29 runs given up on 42 hits and 13 walks. Toronto (11-12) gave up leads in 10-8 and 11-4 losses to the Baltimore Orioles this week. It was never close Friday as the Boston Red Sox got to Mark Buehrle early en route to an 8-1 win. "Tomorrow comes quickly and early," Jays manager John Gibbons said hopefully, "So we need to get back out and play some good baseball." Its sorely needed. Torontos pitching staff has a combined earned-run average of 4.70 with 99 walks. And the Jays are hitting .247. Boston slugger David Ortiz hit his 50th career homer against the Jays and right-hander Jake Peavey scattered five hits over seven innings in a tidy outing to earn his first win after four non-decisions. A unanimous NL Cy Young Award-winner in 2007, Peavey struck out seven and walked two. The lone blemish on the Peavey scoresheet was a Juan Francisco home run -- his first as a Blue Jay -- in the seventh inning. The six-foot-two 245-pound designated hitter muscled a moonshot that landed in the right-field boxes just under the 500 level. Buehrle (4-1) was trying to become first Blue Jays starter to win his first five starts of the campaign. Instead he wobbled early as the Red Sox (11-13) recorded their 300th career victory against Toronto before an announced crowd of 29,411. The 35-year-old left-hander came into the game with a 4-0 record and MLB-leading 0.64 ERA. Buehrle had allowed two runs in 28 innings, striking out 19 and walking only five batters. The opposition was batting .210 against him. On Friday, he gave up seven runs on 12 hits in 5 1/3 innings, throwing 101 pitches that included 64 strikes. Buehrle walked three, had no strikeouts and saw his ERA increase to 2.16. "Hes been so good. Thats baseball, youre not going to be perfect every time out there," Gibbons said. "Hell bounce back. He was just off tonight, its that simple." Buehrle pointed to his walks and some bloop hits that found holes and eluded defenders. "Youve got to have the luck on your side. I wasnt hitting my spots as good as I was in the past. And when I did they got some base hits. But overall, too many strikes in the middle of the zone and they took advantage of it." Boston outhit Toronto 16-6 with all nine Red Sox starters registering hits on the night. The roof was closed on a wet, windy evening in Toronto. But down the street, Raptors fans braved the elements at Maple Leaf Square to watch Game 3 of Torontos NBA playoff series against the Nets in Brooklyn on the big screen outside the Air Canada Centre. That ending was closer but no more satisfying to locals. A leadoff walk and four hits in the second inning put the Jays behind 4-0 as Boston sent seven men to the plate and Buehrle threw 30 pitches. An A.J. Pierzynski sacrifice fly, Will Middlebrooks single and Dustin Pedroias two-RBI single kept the Boston scoreboard ticking. The inning snapped Buehrles streak of 0-23 with runners in scoring position. An Ortiz home run to deep right field made it 5-0 in the third. It was Ortizs fifth homer of the season and the 436th of his career, moving him within two of tying Andre Dawson and Jason Giambi for 40th place on the MLB all-time list. The Ortiz blast was also his 33rd at the Rogers Centre. Only Alex Rodriguez (36) has hit more in a visitors uniform here. Torontos Jose Bautista doubled in the fourth and has now reached base safely in all 23 games this season. The feel-good story ended quickly when he was caught stealing third, with one out and Edwin Encarnacion on first. Dioner Navarro then popped up to end the threat. "Ive got no idea," Gibbons said when asked what Bautista was thinking. "Its not smart winning baseball. Im sure he wont do it again." Said Peavey: "That was a shot in the arm for us." Middlebrooks, returning to the Boston lineup from a strained right calf injury that had sidelined him since April 4, doubled home Pierzynski in the sixth to make it 6-0. Buehrle exited one hitter later after walking the No. 9 hitter, Jackie Bradley Jr. Neil Wagner followed Buehrle and soon had to deal with the bases loaded, with two out, after a Jose Reyes error and Ortiz walk. Wagner walked Mike Napoli to make it 7-0, after the Boston first baseman had fouled off a string of balls with the count full, before striking out Jonny Gomes. The Jays had men on first and third with two out in the sixth but Peavey struck out Bautista and Encarnacion to snuff out Torontos first threat of the night. Boston manager John Farrell called it a key moment. "Jake gets two big strikeouts to end their threat, to keep the momentum on our side." The hard-throwing Wagner, who complicated matters with two walks and one hit batsman in 1 1/3 innings, was followed by Todd Redmond. The Jays sent Wagner to Triple-A Buffalo after the game, calling up pitcher Chad Jenkins. Bradley, who had three extra base hits on the night, made it 8-1 with a two-out RBI double off Redmond in the ninth. Chris Capuano pitched the eighth for Boston, striking out the side. Andrew Miller worked the ninth, giving up a single while striking out two. Air Force 1 Pas Cher . Argentina, who have yet to beat New Zealand in 17 meetings, rocked the All Blacks with an early converted try to backrower Juan Manuel Leguizamon and led 7-0 after five minutes. But Smiths double in the 23rd and 26th minutes - when Argentina was reduced to 14 men by the sin-binning of hooker Eusebio Guinazu - turned the tide of the match and set up New Zealands third straight Championship win. Vapormax Plus Soldes .C. -- Carter Ashton had a pair of goals and added an assist as the Toronto Marlies downed the Charlotte Checkers 5-2 on Saturday in the American Hockey League. http://www.chaussurepascherchine.fr/gros...-old-skool.html. The Goldeyes (10-7) lost 4-1 to the Saltdogs (8-9) Sunday afternoon before 5,834 sizzling fans at Shaw Park. The loss drops Winnipegs record to 3-4 during this past weeks seven-game homestand. Air Max 97 Homme Pas Cher . Boston is making its first appearance in the ALCS since 2008. The 6-foot-11 forward-centre has agreed to a multiyear deal with the Nets, his agent says Monday. Blatche appeared in all 82 games last season, his first with the team, averaging 10.3 points. CALGARY -- Although she wasnt pleased with her time, Ottawas Ivanie Blondin skated well enough to win the womens 5,000 metres at the Canadian Olympic speedskating trials on Friday. "I was really nervous for it," said Blondin, who finished in a time of seven minutes 18.45 seconds to win the race by less than half a second. "Im a little surprised with the time and disappointed. It shouldnt have been that close and I shouldnt have skated probably one of the worst times Ive skated in like two years." Blondin finished ahead of Edmontons Nicole Garrido, who had a time of 7:18.87, and Josie Spence of Kamloops, B.C., at 7:23.24. "I wouldnt say I skated really well, but Im obviously happy that I came out on top today," Blondin said. "I think its kind of a miracle that I did." Blondins result will be good enough to earn her a spot to compete for Canada in the 5,000 metres at the Winter Games in Sochi, Russia, according to Sean Ireland, Speed Skating Canadas long-track program director. "She would be the first person in that provisional quota spot," Ireland said. Canadas team, which will consist of 10 women and eight men for all disciplines, will be officially announced on Jan. 22. Four years ago Blondin competed at both the short-track and long-track speedskating Olympic trials, but failed to earn a spot to compete at the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver. "I developed ulcers in my stomach because I was so nervous and stressed out," said Blondin, who finished second in the 3,000 metres on the first day of the Olympic trials last Saturday. "This time around its been a lot better, but its still stressful. "Sometimes I feel like the general public doesnt really realize how much stress you put on your body when you go through these Olympic trials. Its nice to watch and see and everything, but being in it Ive probably got like five grey hairs from this, even though Im 23." Blondin will now take a couple days to relax before heading to Tucson, Arizona to attend a pre-Olympic training camp. "I think itll be nice to get away and relax and just calm down a little bit from these Olympic trials," she said, adding that she doesnt think she will battle as many nerves in Sochi. "Now that the Olympic trials are over and just being at the Games, Ill have a lot less pressure because realistically I dont have anything to lose when Im there." While Blondin believes she did enough to qualify to compete for Canada in three events (5,000 metres, 3,000 metres and womens team pursuit) in Sochi, Torontos Jordan Belchos will have to wait to find out his fate after winning the mens 10,000 metres with a time of 13:24.96 on Friday. Winnipegs Stefan Waples finished second in 13:53.65, while Francois Dery of St. Jean Chrysostome, Que., placed third at 13:58.30. Whether Belchos gets to compete for Canada at the Games depends on what other countries do, said Ireland. "Currently we do not have a quota spot for the Olympics themselves in the 10,000 metres," Ireland said. "We have the first reserve spot, so if another country declines a 10,000 spot, well then theres a chance that we might be able to fill that depending on our own quotas." Belchos said hed rather be in a state of limbo, than not have any chance at all to compete at the Winter Olympics. "Id rather be in this situation than be out," he said. "I dont know what the chances are or anything like that. Im just trying to skate and be prepared if that happens." Thats the right attitude for Belchos to have, Ireland said. "My advice would be to train and prepare knowing that theres a chance," said Ireland, adding that he should know whether another country declines a spot in the 10,000 by mid-January. "Its slim chance at that." Until he finds out his fate, Belchos said that he will continue his usual training regimen. "The next two weeks for me are just about getting away from skating and just training to be an Olympian, but knowing it could not happen," he said. "Im in a position where if it doesnt happen, its almost what I expect. If it does, it would be a pleasant surprise. Its tough to be in such a weird spot." Nike Air Pippen Sale . DENVER - Carlos Gonzalez is crossing his swollen left index finger that a little break can finally fix his dinged-up digit. After dealing with a finicky finger for most of the season, the Colorado Rockies All-Star outfielder was placed on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday. A difficult choice, he said, but he decided that enough was finally enough. Unable to grip the bat with the finger so inflamed, his average has dipped to .255 this season. This from a career .300 hitter. "Everybody knows Im not the same player out there," the 28-year-old Gonzalez said. "I dont think its just smart to play that way and keep hurting the team when I have teammates that are doing really good. I think this is the best option right now." To take Gonzalezs place on the roster, the Rockies recalled infielder Ryan Wheeler from Triple-A Colorado Springs. They also recalled catcher Michael McKenry from Colorado Springs and designated catcher Jordan Pacheco for assignment. The break will give Gonzalez a chance to rest not only his ailing finger, but a balky left knee thats given him trouble at times. "Deep down, he feels like this is his best shot to get healthy," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. "I told him that there are four months left in the season. A couple of weeks right now to be healthy the rest of the way? That would be a good trade off." He agreed. An easy decision given the way his replacement in left field, Corey Dickerson, is swinging the bat right now. Dickerson is hitting .345 with seven homers. "A guy whos been really hot like Dickerson — I think hes the best option right now at the plate," said Gonzalez, who was bothered by a sprained right middle finger last season, playing in just 19 games after the All-Star break. "For me, Ive just got to heal and be the CarGo that everybody knows." Head trainer Keith Dugger said the plan is to simply let the finger rest for a little bit. They will also massage the digit and do "some little tricks we have." "He just needs time off from swinging — bottom line," Dugger added. "I cant give you a timeframe. I dont know if two weeks is going to be enough." Dugger said they will test out the finger in about 10 days. "If theres no improvement, you back off again," Dugger said. "If theres improvement, you move forward." Weiss remains confident that once Gonzalez gets his finger situation resolved, hell return to the form that led him to be an All-Star the last two seasons. "His track record is pretty good," Weiss said. "Hes going to hit and hes going to perform. Its just tough performing in this league, trying to work around nagging injuries." Saints Jerseys China . Crisp, who scored the tying run with two outs in the eighth inning, hit a towering home run off Seattle reliever Hector Noesi (0-1) on an 0-1 pitch. The ball landed just above the out-of-town scoreboard in right field. Its the sixth game-ending hit of Crisps career. Yoenis Cespedes and Sam Fuld also drove in runs for Oakland, which rallied from two runs down for its first walkoff win of the season. Drew Pomeranz (1-0), the fifth As pitcher, worked one scoreless inning for the win. Abraham Almonte had two hits and an RBI for Seattle. The Mariners were coming off a series sweep of Anaheim and were attempting to go 4-0 for the first time since 1985. After scoring 28 runs in the three games against the Angels, Seattles offence managed just six hits against Oakland and stranded seven base runners. The Mariners scored in the first without the benefit of a hit. Almonte hit a grounder that went through the legs of Oakland infielder Alberto Callaspo, who was making his first career start at first base. Second baseman Nick Punto chased down the ball in right field but threw wildly back to the bag for another error, allowing Almonte to take second. Two batters later, Canos groundout scored Almonte. Almontes RBI single off Oakland starter Jesse Chavez in the fifth drove in Logan Morrison and made it 2-0. That put Seattle starter Roenis Elias in shape to become the first Cuban-born pitcher to win a game for Seattle before the Mariners bullpen gave up the lead. Elias, an all-star in the minors a year ago, aallowed one runs and two hits in five effective innings but left with a no-decision.dddddddddddd The 25-year-old lefty allowed only two runners past first base and struck out three and walked three. The play was reviewed and upheld. Oakland failed to score after loading the bases with two outs in the seventh before Cespedes tripled in Crisp to tie it with two outs in the eighth. CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Cornerback Leon Hall jogged toward the right side of the defence and took his customary place, matched against receiver Mohamed Sanu. The play was a handoff, so Hall didnt have to do much. Thats not what mattered. Hall lined up for the first 11-on-11 play in the Bengals first practice of training camp on Thursday, an encouraging sign for one of the NFLs top defences. "It means a lot," Hall said. The 29-year-old cornerback tore his right Achilles tendon midway through last season, the second time hes sustained such an injury. He tore his left Achilles in 2011, but was back as the starter the following year and played very well. Hes made another quick and full recovery. "There was never really a doubt in my mind," Hall said. "It was just trying to be patient enough to go through that long process again." Even though hes fine physically, Hall hasnt been able to be on the field during off-season workouts, so hes still got a lot of work to do on his form. At one point during the afternoon practice, he went to the sideline and worked on his side-to-side movement. "I felt good," he said after practice. "No pain. I felt strong. My footwork wasnt very good, but thats going to come in a few days." Defensive tackle Geno Atkins is coming back from a torn anterior cruciate ligament and wanted to participate in the first practice, but was held out on Thursday as a precaution. Coach Marvin Lewis wants to give him a few days to ease in before hes cleared to fully practice. Hall is a mainstay on a defence that has ranked among the leagues top 10 for each of the past three years, finishing third overall in yards allowed last season. The Bengals never doubted that hed be ready despite his second significant injury in three seasons. "Leon, he works hard at everything he does," defensive co-ordinator Paul Guenther said. "If you can have a poster child for a coachs guy, thats him. Hell do whatever he has to do. He spent the whole off-season getting that thing back to go. Im excited to see him back on the field." After Halls Achilles surgery in 2011, there were doubts about whether he would still be quick enough to cover the other teams top receiver. When he got back on the field, he was just as good, if not better. "His speed became better last time, which is really something," Lewis said. "I thought he played faster in 2012 than he did before. I think thats what excites him about this: Maybe anatomically Ive got something that made me better." Hall doesnt know if he was that much faster after the first Achilles surgery, but all of the rehabilitation work has him in good shape for the start of camp. "I feel like I felt years ago, before I did the first one," Hall said. "Ive heard numerous times that your Achilles is technically stronger after you have the surgery. I wouldnt suggest going and tearing your Achilles, but thats just what I heard from the doctors and people in general. Thats good news. "I feel better. Lets just hope it translates to the field." Notes: The Bengals claimed first-year WR Conner Vernon off waivers from Cleveland and signed free agent WR Jeremy Johnson, a rookie from Southern Methodist. They waived punter T.J. Conley. ... OL Andrew Whitworth was held out of practice with a sore calf. ... At the start of practice, a couple of fans hung two banners from a public bridge that overlooks the practice fields. The first banner urged the Bengals not to sign quarterback Andy Dalton to a contract extension. The other said: "AJ to AJ, the future is now." The Bengals signed quarterback AJ McCarron in the fifth round. McCarron didnt throw to A.J. Green on Thursday -- hes resting a sore passing shoulder. Custom Indiana Pacers Jerseys .com) - The University of Montana named Bob Stitt as its new head football coach on Tuesday.Tucson, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - The sixth-ranked Arizona Wildcats put a lengthy homecourt winning streak on the line on Wednesday evening, as they take on the Oregon Ducks in a Pac-12 tilt at the McKale Center. Sean Millers Wildcats are sporting the second-longest active homecourt winning streak in the nation, now sitting at 32 games. Arizona has won four straight games overall and six of its last seven to move to 18-2 on the season. With Saturdays 73-50 rout of California in Berkeley, the Wildcats moved to 6-1 in conference play, good for a first-place tie with Utah. Dana Altmans Ducks enter this contest off one of their best performances of the season, as lethal shooting led to a rather easy 82-64 whipping of UCLA over the weekend. The victory was the second straight for Oregon, which is now 14-6 overall and 4-3 in the Pac-12. These two teams met just a couple of weeks ago in Eugene, with the visiting Wildcats making light work of the Ducks in a lopsided 80-62 decision. With the win, Arizona improved to 47-26 all-time against Oregon. The Cats are a solid 27-8 against the Ducks in Tucson. The Ducks could do no wrong in their showdown with the Bruins over the weekend, as they set a Matthew Knight Arena record for 3-point accuracy (.692), while converting a scorching .623 from the floor overall (season- best). Almost everyone got involved in the scoring onslaught, including five Ducks who finished in double figures. Joseph Young led the charge with 16 points, followed closely by Dwayne Benjamin and his 15. Elgin Cook tacked on 11 points, while Ahmaad Rorie and Jalil Abdul-Bassit checked in with 10 points apiece. While the teams efficiency was a little out of the ordinary, Oregon has been an offensive force by nature. The Ducks come in as the Pac-12s top scoring team at a hefty 77.8 ppg. Randle is the go-to-guy at the offensive end, ranking second in the Pac-12 in scoring at an impressive 19.dddddddddddd3 ppg. Young leads the conference in 3-pointers made (2.7 per game), and is responsible for over a third of Oregons 3-pointers to date (54-of-155). Far more than a one-trick pony, Young is also tops on the team in assists (70), while finding time to grab just under five boards per game (4.8). Scoring help comes in the form of Dillon Brooks and Cook, who chime in with 13.2 and 11.9 ppg, respectively. Arizona has the ability to win games at either end of the floor, as evidenced by the teams +15.5 scoring margin (second in the Pac-12). The Wildcats arent far behind the Ducks in terms of scoring potential, ranking second in the league at 75.1 ppg. However, the defensive effort has been strong as well, with UA ranking third in scoring defense (59.5 ppg) and first in rebounding margin (+7.1). Freshman forward Stanley Johnson has made an immediate impact in Tucson and currently leads the team in both scoring (15.0 ppg) and rebounding (7.0 rpg). Frontcourt depth comes in the form of Brandon Ashley (11.2 ppg, 5.3 rpg) and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson (10.9 ppg, 6.4 rpg). Point guard T.J. McConnell (9.0 ppg) can score, but is at his best when doling out to his teammates (third in the conference at 5.9 apg). The Wildcats held a 10-point lead in the first half and that ballooned to 24 points in the second half, as Arizona cruised to victory over the helpless Golden Bears. Arizona shot 49 percent from the floor and outscored California 23-1 at the free-throw line in the game. Johnson led the way again and just missed a double-double, finishing with 18 points and nine rebounds. Dusan Ristic came off the bench to tally 12 points, while center Kaleb Tarczewski finished with 10. ' ' '

NICE, France -- Real Sociedad winger Antoine Griezmann staked his claim for a World Cup starting spot with his first international goal for France, only for midfielder Victor Caceres to do likewise and earn Paraguay a 1-1 draw with an 89th-minute header Sunday in Les Bleus penultimate warm-up game before heading to Brazil. Griezmann has impressed since recently breaking into the team and the substitute put the hosts ahead in the 82nd minute with an assured finish, curling the ball into the right corner after collecting it on the left side of the penalty area. France had the majority of possession but Arsenal forward Olivier Giroud missed several chances and failed to add to his international tally after scoring twice against Norway in a 4-0 win on Tuesday night. "Were not going to win all of our games 4-0," Deschamps said. "We made the breakthrough after creating a lot of chances against a team defending deep in numbers. We dropped too deep and they equalized." Deschamps rested striker Karim Benzema and winger Franck Ribery, who has a back injury. French media have reported that he could be doubtful for the World Cup. "We will do everything we can for him to be ready for the Jamaica game next Sunday," Deschamps said, referring to Frances last friendly before going to Brazil. Deschamps made three changes from the Norway game, with Loic Remy replacing Griezmann on the left wing, Bacary Sagna taking Mathieu Debuchys slot at right back and Hugo Lloris returning in goal. Remy had Frances first chance, side-footing wide after Mathieu Valbuena had played him in down the left side of the penalty area. Giroud had the next chance, using his body well to shield the ball, before spinning and hitting a low shot that was blocked. Lloris was called into action midway through the first half when he gathered a low shot from veteran striker Roque Santa Cruz. France hit back moments later and midfielder Paul Pogba drilled a shot just wide, and then Giroud held the ball up down the right before floating a cross over to Remy, whose scissor-kick volley flew wide. Remy and Giroud combined well throughout the match, and Giroud headed wide from Remys cross at the start of the second half. Giroud then crossed from the right only for Valbuena to nod the ball wide. Valbuena had set up Giroud for a headed goal against Norway, and almost did so again only for goalkeeper Anthony Silva to tip the forwards looping header over the crossbar. From Valbuenas corner, Silva saved yet another Giroud header. After Caceres scored with his first goal in 55 appearances for Paraguay, Giroud almost netted the winner right at the end as his astute chip went just over. Trailing by a run with none on and two outs in the sixth, Texas got run-scoring singles from Geovany Soto, Rougned Odor and Shin-Soo Choo to go ahead in only its third win in 17 July games. Adrian Beltre drove in the Rangers first run with a fielders choice in the third inning on one of New Yorks five errors -- three by starting pitcher Shane Greene (2-1). Second baseman Brian Roberts and shortstop Derek Jeter made the other errors for the Yankees, who had not committed five in a nine-inning game since Aug. 20, 1998, against Minnesota. Mikolas (1-2) yielded two runs, including Jacoby Ellsburys homer, and four hits in a career-high 7 1-3 innings to outlast Greene in a matchup of 25-year-old pitchers getting a shot because of injury-wrecked rotations. Joakim Soria gave up a single to Kelly Johnson and plunked pinch-hitter Brian McCann with a pitch before getting Yangervis Solarte to fly out for his 17th save. Mikolas won for the first time since Aug. 21, 2012, with San Diego. He made 25 relief appearances for the Padres that year. Hes had little success this year, coming in with a 10.05 ERA in three starts. It all nearly fell apart for Mikolas in the fifth when the Yankees loaded the bases. But with a large crowd cheering Jeter on his figurine night, he grounded into an inning-ending double play. Winners of only five of their last 25 games, the Rangers then broke through against Greene in his first appearancee at Yankee Stadium.dddddddddddd Soto struck out with runners on first and third in the second -- they were there thanks to two poor throws to first base by Greene -- but came through with the tying hit in the sixth, a single to left after Jake Smolinski singled and Jim Adduci walked. Matt Thornton relieved and gave up consecutive run-scoring hits to Odor and Choo. Playing the outfield for the first time since the All-Star break because of left ankle trouble, Choo snapped an 0-for-22 skid with a third-inning double. Green was charged with four runs and five hits in 5 2-3 innings. He had given up just two runs total in his first two career starts. Carlos Beltran put New York ahead with a sacrifice fly in the first after Jeter walked, advanced to second on a balk and third on Ellsburys single. Ellsbury homered leading off the fourth to give the Yankees a 2-1 lead. It was the seventh straight time he reached base after going 4 for 4 with a walk in a win over Cincinnati on Sunday. NOTES: Rangers C Soto left after the top of the sixth with tightness in his right groin. Smolinski bruised his left foot and was lifted for a pinch hitter in the ninth. ... MIAMI -- Giancarlo Stantons home runs can be indescribable for his Marlins teammates. "Uuufff," was all shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria could come up with after Stantons latest mammoth shot. Stanton hit a homer that was pushing 500 feet to lead Miami to an 8-2 win over the San Diego Padres on Friday night. His two-run blast travelled an estimated 484 feet to left field, according to ESPN Stats and Info, nearly leaving the stadium and giving the Marlins a 2-0 lead in the first inning "He absolutely crushed that ball, but it doesnt surprise me," Marlins pitcher Tom Koehler said. "Ive seen him hit balls further." Jarrod Saltalamacchia had three hits and drove in two runs and Adeiny Hechavarria had a career-high four hits for the Marlins, who have won four of five to start the season. "I think guys are feeling good, theyre confident," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said. "Were having fun. Were just going out there and playing." Tom Koehler (1-0) pitched six innings, allowing two runs and Brad Hand pitched three scoreless innings for his first career save. Yasmani Grandal and Jedd Gyorko each had two hits for the Padres, who have lost three straight. Eric Stults (0-1) allowed five runs in four innings. Stantons second home run got the Marlins rolling and is the longest in the three-year history of the Marlins ballpark. "It was a good first punch," Stanton said. He has nine RBIs through five games while hitting .350. Logan Morrison previously had the longest homer in the stadium at 467 feet off Washingtons Dan Haren on Sept. 6, 2013. "Now you cant say Lo-Mos got a bigger bomb than me," Stanton said. "I thought the one that hit the scoreboard (462 feet against Jamie Moyer in 2012) was equivalent, but sweet. The pitch wasnt where Stults had in mind. "I just threw a fastball down the middle," Stults said. "I was trying to throw a fastball in and just didnt get it to my spot." Casey McGehee had two RBIs pushing his total to 10, which is the most by any Marlins player in the first five games of the season. McGehee had a sacrifice fly as part of a three-run third inning to stretch the lead to 5-0 and had an RBI single in the eighth to cap the scoring for Miami. The Marlins have scored 35 runs in their 4-1 start after finishing last in the majors in runs last season during their 100-loss campaign. On the other end is San Diego, which has scored eight runs in four games. "Thats something that can get a little bit overplayed," Gyorko said. "We have 700 at-bats coming so you cant look too much into things at this point." Garrett Jones also had an RBI double and Marcell Ozuna drove in a run for the Marlins. Hechavarria, known more for his dazzling defensive plays at shortstop, is hitting .579 after hitting .227 as a rookie last season. "I was just disappointing in my performance last year, that was a driving force into me improving this year," Hechavarria said. Yonder Alonso and Gyorko drove in the runs for the Padres. "Its so big in this game to get into a rhythm and they had it going early and we didnt," Alonso said. Coach Randy Carlyle had already caused a stir in Detroit a night earlier by calling James Reimers play in a loss "just OK," and then the goaltender gave up a goal on the first shot he faced Wednesday against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Unfortunately for the Leafs, that was just the beginning of a long game as defenceman Paul Ranger was injured and Steven Stamkos rang up a hat trick to hand them a 5-3 loss at Air Canada Centre, their third in a row. Even after the club released an update saying Ranger was "stable, conscious and alert" after his head hit the glass on a hit from Alex Killorn and he was taken to a local hospital, there were plenty of worried teammates in the home locker-room after a defeat that dropped the Leafs three points behind the Lightning in the Atlantic Division. With that came a notion of missing an opportunity to make something out of the impossibly difficult situation of seeing Ranger go down. "You try to use that as motivation to go out there and give yourself the best opportunity to get a chance and try to use the player, Range, get it for him," Carlyle said. "And we fell short, for sure." Against the Lightning (38-24-7), falling short meant starting terribly with a goal against 59 seconds in, taking too many penalties and giving Stamkos far too much room to operate. But Killorns hit on Ranger understandably took the lions share of the attention. Tampa Bay coach Jon Cooper called it "probably the turning point in the game" as his team killed off the five-minute major, while the Leafs (36-27-8) just struggled to pick their game up after watching him get wheeled off the ice on a stretcher. "We say our jobs to get ready and prepare for the next period, but thats scary," winger Joffrey Lupul said. "He obviously didnt look great when he was leaving the ice. So youre trying to clear your head and focus on the next period. But you cant lie -- obviously part of you is wondering whats going on with him." When Ranger went down, the Leafs were trailing 3-2 after Radko Gudas beat Reimer in the games first minute with a seemingly innocent shot from just inside the blue-line. Reimer didnt see the shot, and long after his Leafs came back to take the lead on goals by Phil Kessel and Nikolai Kulemin, Carlyle didnt blame his goalie for that one. "The first goals kind of (a) fluke," Carlyle said. "What do you do? Its a seeing-eye shot, theres a screen, it hits a post and goes in. So you cant get too unravelled by that." Reimer, who gave up five goals on 30 shots, didnt unravel, but a lack of discipline and the Leafs defence was to blame for Stamkos scoring twice in the first period and then completing the hat trick early in the second. An interference penalty on David Clarkson led to the first goal, and there were missed assignments on all three. For Stamkos, who was playing in just his seventh game since returning from a four-month absence after breaking his right leg, called getting the natural hat trick in front of family and friends the highlight of his season. "I was a little disappointed there was no hats on the ice," the Markham, Ont., native said. "I guess Ill take it anyway." Though he couldnt be blamed for any of the three goals Stamkos scored, Reimer couldnt take many positives out of his performance. Because Jonathan Bernier remains out with a groin injury, Reimer became the first Toronto goalie to start on back-to-back days this season, and this wasnt the result he wanted when thrust into that situation. "I just want to come out and play well and kind of be a difference-maker, and unfortunately it wasnt the case," Reimer said.dddddddddddd"I thought I made some good saves, but it definitely wasnt the performance I was looking for. I wanted to come out and be big and keep your team in it, and that didnt happen tonight." Reimers failings, notably on the first goal, paled in comparison to the other drama and blunders that tormented the Leafs against the Lightning. Six minor penalties led to two power-play goals by the Lightning -- the first by Stamkos and the second one in the third from linemate Tyler Johnson -- which wound up being enough to make the difference. "A lot of things come down to special teams," Cooper said. "Weve had our ups and downs all year. For us to kill off all those penalties, especially the five minutes and then get two power-play goals. Thats how youre going to win. Thats how youre going to win down the stretch and get into the playoffs." With the victory, the Lightning, who got 36 saves on 39 shots from Vezina Trophy candidate Ben Bishop, moved ahead of the Montreal Canadiens for second place in the Atlantic Division. The Leafs, who at 71 games have played the most of any team in the Eastern Conference, held onto the first wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference but lost a major opportunity to pick up points. Reimer lamented not doing that more than being unable to cover up the fire storm that surrounded him. "It doesnt really matter how you play or how people talk about how you play as long as you get points," he said. "As tough as things go or as good as things go, you can play a great game and still lose. The big thing is points, so as far as statement games or whatnot, I think really at this time of year its just about your team and about getting your team points, not necessarily about you making a statement." Stamkos, who scored his three goals on his only three shots of the night, made a statement that hes back and capable of carrying the Lightning. Cooper was looking forward to seeing how the 24-year-old would fare in his "backyard," and he didnt disappoint. "Theres special players out there that find a way, they have that innate ability to rise to the occasion," Cooper said. "For Stammer to come back in here to his hometown and do what he did tonight, basically put the team on his shoulders, I cant say enough about (him)." And the Leafs couldnt say enough about how things went wrong, especially when it came to not containing one of the leagues best in Stamkos. "We were getting exposed," Lupul said. "There were times today where we were good, other times we made some errors getting the puck out of our zone, once by me and then a couple times we let their best player get the puck in an area where we cant do that." And then there was a lack of desperation early on that only came in the second half of the game and showed up when Jake Gardiner cut the deficit to one with 12:40 left. Giving half of what was necessary was not enough. "I felt that our desperation level went up for the last 30 minutes of the game," Carlyle said. "Weve got to do a better job than that." NOTES -- Kessels goal was his 35th of the season, two short of his career high. ... Gardiners goal was his fifth in the past seven games and 10th of the season. ... Killorn was given a game misconduct along with the five-minute major for boarding Ranger, whom the Leafs said was taken to a hospital for a "precautionary assessment." ... Carlyle said Bernier was "coming along" and he expected the injured netminder to take shots during practice Friday. ' ' '

The 26-year-old stopped 38 shots and was instrumental in leading the San Jose Sharks to a 5-2 win over the Ottawa Senators Sunday night. Stalock, who previously had made just three appearances in relief of starter Antti Niemi, admitted he was nervous and excited. "I think it helped a lot being a five oclock game for me and not having to sit around all night and come to the rink and go through the routine," he said. "It was a little easier than sitting around all day in my hotel room." Stalock made 16 saves in the first period and helped the team jump out to a 3-1 lead after 20 minutes of play. "Maybe its a good thing that I saw a lot early and was able to feel it," said Stalock. "They were kind of shooting it from everywhere, which I was kind of expecting they would, but not being in a game yet I was lucky enough to make saves." Stalocks teammates were happy to see him pick up the win and were thrilled to be able to give him a few early goals to help with his confidence. "Hes been patiently waiting behind (Niemi) and to come out with a performance like that was huge for us," said Sharks captain Joe Thornton. Tomas Hertl, Andrew Desjardins, Tommy Wingels, James Sheppard and Joe Pavelski scored for the Sharks (10-1-1), who were playing their fourth of a five-game road trip. The Senators (4-5-2) received goals from Erik Karlsson and Marc Methot, who picked up his first of the season. Craig Anderson made 24 saves in defeat. This marked the first time this season that the Sharks had been outshot in a game. The Senators have few answers for their play of late, but realize things have to change. For the second straight game Ottawa allowed the opposition to jump out to a 2-0 lead. "We cant spot good teams leads," said Senators captain Jason Spezza. "We get behind and then it doesnt matter what we do, were chasing the whole game." The Senators lack of urgency proved costly as the Sharks scored two early third-period goals to put the game out of reach. Sheppard scored his first of the season as he beat Anderson far side and Pavelski made it 5-2 after burying a big rebound. Trailing 3-1 to start the second period, the Senators gave the home crowd something to cheer about when Methot closed the gap with a bullet from just inside the blue line. A poor start by Ottawa proved to be the difference yet again. "I just thought we chased the game the whole night," said Ottawa coach Paul MacLean. "Im very concerned about the way that weve played to this point in the season." In the past the Senators would often struggle at the start of games, but were resilient and became known for their ability to come back late. "Our identity in the past has been a hard-working group thats very competitive and comes to play the whole game and plays hard the whole game," added MacLean. "Right now we dont do that. So what is our identity?" The Senators were chasing the Sharks nearly from the start of the game. Hertl opened the scoring at 1:16 as the puck bounced over Senators defenceman Joe Corvos stick, allowing Hertl to quickly put it between Andersons legs. Just over five minutes later sloppy play by the Senators in their own end allowed Desjardins to make it 2-0 as he picked up a rebound and scored off his backhand. Ottawa cut the lead in half midway through the period, as Karlsson was able to score through traffic. With Senators forward Cory Conacher creating a screen Stalock barely had a chance to see the shot until it was behind him. Any momentum from the Ottawa goal was lost after giving up a short-handed goal with less than two minutes remaining in the period. Karlsson bobbled the puck at his own blue line and San Joses Logan Couture took off on a breakaway. While Anderson made the initial save the puck rested in the crease and Wingels banged it in to restore the two-goal lead. "Right now we make a mistake and it ends up in our net," said Anderson. "Im not sure how you change that. Obviously you need a little bit of luck, but at the same time youve got to limit the amount of mistakes you make." This was the second and final meeting between the two teams this season. The 2014 World Cup in Brazil has seen its fair share of excitement over the last 15 days. A total of 133 goals have been scored and thats just been during group play. As the first stage of the tournament comes to an end, the bracket is finally set for the Round of 16. There have been no shortage of storylines to go along with these matches and so moving forward, how do you see the Round of 16 unfolding? Probably the team feeling the most pressure is Brazil. The host nation didnt win its group in dominant fashion. Despite that fact, Brazil have managed to create offence and have one of the best strikers in the tournament so far: Neymar. The 22-year-old is tied for the tournament lead in goals with four. Brazil, however, is in for a big test against Chile. Although Chile finished second in Group B, they have proven to have a great team dynamic led by Alexis Sanchez and Eduardo Vargas. These two teams are familiar with each other but Brazil has won nine of the last 10 meetings between the two nations. With both teams being from the same continent, its sure to be an exciting battle. Another all-South American match-up sees Colombia taking on Uruguay. Luis Suarez might have already overshadowed this game, but its still going to be a wild affair. Uruguay will be without their star striker because of suspension, and it might be a big blow for the squad given that he has scored half of their goals. On the other side, Colombia has gotten stronger as the tournament has gone on. Even without their star Falcao, Colombia went undefeated and will look to James Rodriguez to lead them to the quarterfinals. Another undefeated squad is the Netherlands. Theyve scored the most goals in the tournament with 10 and will look to add to that tally against Mexico. Led by Robin van Persie and Arjen Robben, the Dutch havent missed a beat from the squad in 2010 that finished as runners up to Spain. Mexico however has been one of the surprises of the tournament. They stumbled into Brazil after barely qualifying but have been one of the best teams so far, going undefeated in the group stage. What about the dark horses? No one saw Costa Rica coming out of their group period - let alone in first place - and they have so far shocked the world. They have been the surprise team of Brazil 2014 and can continue to be with a victory against Greece. But Greece has a strong defensive mindset that can shut any top offence down. Will that be enough to get them through? France, Argentina and Germany have also been impressive and have something to prove as well. Do they have what it takes to move on? Who do you see booking their ticket to the quarterfinals for a chance at World Cup gold? Its Your Call! Nike Air Max Italia . Burkes Flames are one of several teams involved in heavy trade speculation going into next Wednesdays 3pm et deadline, with the most prominent name in play being forward Michael Cammalleri.STANFORD, Calif. -- The Denver Broncos retired John Elways No. 7 jersey four months after he announced his playing career was over in 1999. The following year, he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. And the Pro Football Hall of Fame welcomed the quarterback in his first year of eligibility. The one honour Elway never thought would come will take place Thursday night. Thirty years after he graduated from the university, Stanford will finally retire Elways iconic No. 7 jersey at halftime of its game against second-ranked Oregon. Hell join Jim Plunkett (No. 16) and Ernie Nevers (No. 1) as the only players whose jerseys have been enshrined by the program. "Realizing the history, it wasnt something that happened a whole lot at Stanford. And thats why it was a great surprise and thrill to learn when coach David Shaw called me a few months ago and told me that they were going to retire the number," Elway said by phone this week. "I think that makes it so much more special now than if theyd done it earlier." Stanford always has been selective with bestowing such an honour. Nevers jersey was retired in 1970, some 45 years after he led Stanford to a Rose Bowl victory over Notre Dame. Nearly 21 years after he became Stanfords only Heisman Trophy winner, Plunketts jersey was retired by the school in November 1991. Nobody at Stanford really knows why it took so long for Elways jersey to be retired. The Cardinal quarterback was the No. 1 overall pick in the 1983 NFL draft and one of the most celebrated athletes in school history. Shaw said he started asking the question when he was a wide receiver at Stanford in the early 1990s and asked again after he was promoted from offensive co-ordinator to head coach in January 2011. In the past year, after Bernard Muir took over as athletic director, those conversations escalated. "I remember thinking about when I was here. I came in, one of my friends, (quarterback) Mark Butterfield, was wearing No. 7. I said, Why the hell are you wearing No. 7?" Shaw said. "Mark had a great senior year and was great and I just kept thinking, Nobody should be wearing No. 7. "And I came back as a coach, Toby (Gerhart), great player, Why is he wearing No. 7? The last couple years I kept going around and I talked to some of our historian people, I talked to Bernard and I said, We have to do this. He was completely on board. And everybody I talked to said, Yeah, why havent we doone that? There was no malicious intent.dddddddddddd I think it was just one of those things." Shaw said he has spoken to Muir about developing a standard for future numbers to be retired. Muir declined to discuss what the process might entail. Wide receiver Ty Montgomery and defensive end Aziz Shittu both wear No. 7 currently. Whenever they graduate or if they decide to switch numbers next season, nobody at Stanford will ever wear No. 7 again. The irony is that Elway, now the executive vice-president of the Broncos, never intended to wear that number. He wore No. 11 in high school and, in a story he has told many times over the years, a defensive back at Stanford already had taken that number there. Elway said he chose No. 7 over No. 12, which were the only numbers available, "because few athletes wore the number." Now quarterbacks at every level, including Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, wear that number in Elways honour. Elway threw for 9,349 yards and 77 touchdowns while completing 62 per cent of his passes at Stanford. He held nearly every major passing record -- most of them since shattered by Andrew Luck -- when he left school. Elway still owns the single-game record with six touchdown passes in a 54-13 win against Oregon State on Nov. 1, 1980. Elway was the Pac-10 Conference Player of the Year in 1980 and 1982, when he also was a consensus All-American. After the Cardinal lost at rival California on the infamous lateral play in his final collegiate game, Elway finished second to Herschel Walker in the 1982 Heisman Trophy voting. "We had the highs and lows when I was at Stanford," said Elway, who led the Broncos to five Super Bowl appearances and two titles during his NFL career. Stanford footballs recent renaissance, which includes three straight BCS bowl appearances, surely helped bring more attention to Elways cause -- and it could help others soon. Stanford greats such as Bobby Garrett, Frankie Albert, John Brodie, Gerhart and Luck are among the top candidates to have their jerseys retired. Shaw said he already has spoken with Gerhart about entering the schools hall of fame, though he wouldnt commit to a similar jersey retirement. He has not allowed any player to wear Lucks No. 12 since the quarterback graduated after the 2011 season. "I dont know what their plans are," Elway said. "Maybe this one opens the door for others to be retired." ' ' '
